I drew up the initial character designs when I was 9 years old. At that time, I probably drew up designs for a dozen or more characters, but most of the personalities were one-dimensional and lacked staying power. Although the comic strip has existed in many different forms over the years, Andrew and Rose have been there from the start. They were the only two characters to survive the first few hundred strips.
For a few years I filled up multiple sketchpads with three strips to a page, and each strip was a three or four panel joke. I experimented with creating full-page “Sunday” comics, in full color, every 7th strip. This continued for a few years, although the output slowed in the first year of college.
In 2014, I challenged myself to create five large spreads on an 18”x24” pad of paper. I enjoyed the larger format that gave me the room to tell a longer story, in the style of the old Krazy Kat comic strip.
I added the “Comix” to my title as a homage to the older newspaper comic strips.
